Celebrating Student Creativity at the San Diego Central Library
This September, the San Diego Central Library will transform into a vibrant art space as students from the Career Technical Education Center (CTEC) showcase their original sculptures. Open from September 4 to 30, the exhibition is a part of the ArtWorks Fellowship program, which empowers young artists through an immersive eight-week journey that fuses art-making with community engagement.
An Artistic Collaboration That Inspires Growth
This initiative, a collaborative effort between Arts Education Connection San Diego and the San Diego County Office of Education’s Juvenile Court and Community Schools (JCCS), highlights the importance of nurturing creativity among students facing various challenges. Under the mentorship of Teaching Artist Stacie Greene, participants explored sculptural techniques, drawing inspiration from Native American pottery as well as renowned sculptors like Louise Nevelson and Joseph Cornell. Over 32 hours of studio practice allowed students to enhance their unique artistic voices, culminating in compelling capstone projects that reflect their journey.
Meet the Artists and Discover Their Inspirations
The opening reception on September 4 from 10:30 a.m. to noon is a significant opportunity for the community to connect with these budding artists. Attendees will have the chance to engage with student creators and learn about the ideas and experiences that shaped their works. This connection underscores the mission of AECSD to link youth to their cultural heritage and unleash their creative potential.
A Pathway to Empowerment and Education
The JCCS program plays a pivotal role in offering accredited education and enrichment opportunities to students confronting issues like incarceration, foster care, and homelessness. By participating in programs like ArtWorks, these young individuals can explore creative pathways that may open doors to their future.
